PETS AND HUMAN HEALTH
We all want to believe that owning and more importantly caring for a pet improves our health. We rationalise that walking and having a well and healthy dog naturally makes us well and healthy too but how do we prove this? What about having a family cat or budgie? Studies and surveys depend on so many other factors that it is difficult to isolate pet owning (and caring) as a health factor. Following are recent publications. University of West. Australia researchers examined the influence of dog ownership on human physical activity in a survey of 1813 adults. Dog owners were 57-77% more likely to achieve “sufficient physical activity” compared to those not owning dogs. Encouraging more dog walking should improve community physical activity levels. A preliminary pilot study by researchers from University of Minnesota concluded that the risk of heart disease (myo-cardial infarction) is over 40% lower for people who keep cats. (Other known risk factors for heart disease weight, diet genetics etc were isolated in this conclusion). The reason was not proven but reduced stress was put forward as a theory. On a light hearted note the Petcare Information & Advisory Service concluded from an online survey that 81% of women found a man who owns a dog more appealing than a man without a dog. 38% of woman chose a Golden Retriever or Lab as the most appealing dog for a man. Single men take note!

ANXIETY, FEAR & PHOBIAS

Almost everyone knows someone with a fear or phobia. Examples of causes are heights, spiders, crowds or open spaces. Dogs and Cats also exhibit these behaviours at times and some need help. Dogs and cats exhibit changes in body language when afraid and may tend to flee, freeze or fight to escape the stimuli they encounter. Anxiety is the anticipation of future danger or misfortune. This can lead to panic attacks and although the fear is generally irrational the perception of the danger is real. Phobia is an irrational intense, persistent fear of certain thing(s). Some common examples: Separation anxiety when the pet becomes anxious & distressed showing vocalisation, destruction, house soiling sometimes vomiting & diarrhoea when their attachment figure (person or other pet) leaves. Fear of noises can be viewed as an anxiety and provoke similar responses to fireworks, thunder, cars backfiring, & gunshots. Spraying and other elimination problems are the most common behavioural problem in Cats. Spraying is a marking behaviour often associated with anxiety. A single cat at home may become anxious about perceived territorial competitors and a multi cat home can have aggression and pecking order problems. All of these behavioural conditions can have physical disease factors that either cause or predispose to the outcome. All pets can have their problem(s) controlled with a thorough & systematic approach to the diagnosis and elimination of the cause(s) plus targeted management and sometimes periods of medication. There is not a magic pill to solve these problems.
